A flag in the national colours was raised on the clock tower of the Royal Castle in the Polish capital in a ceremony attended by the head of state and the First Lady, Agata Kornhauser-Duda.

Poland's Flag Day is a new tradition -- it was established in 2004.

May 2 is also the Day of Poles Abroad. Duda thanked Poles who live overseas for maintaining Polish traditions and teaching the Polish language.

Meanwhile, officials have appealed to all Poles to hang the national flag where they live for six months from May 2 to November 11 as the country marks 100 years since it regained its independence.

Poland marks Constitution Day on May 3 while November 11 is Independence Day, commemorating the anniversary of the restoration of Poland's sovereignty.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.
