Poland's Deputy Culture Minister Jaroław Sellin said that 2018 was a good time to make Warsaw the host of the festival, which will present a cross-section of the region’s musical traditions.

He added that, while works by German and Russian composers belong to the staple concert repertoire, music from the Scandinavian and Baltic countries, from Ukraine, Belarus and the Balkans remained relatively little known.

The festival will launch on November 23 with a special concert in tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki, who will turn 85 that day.

The event will feature Estonian composer Arvo Part, German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, American conductor Laurence Foster and Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak.

An international musicological conference exploring national identities in the musical life of Central and Eastern Europe over the last century will accompany the festival.
