Polish media are reporting that Waldemar Fornalik has refused to end his contract as coach of Poland's national football side by mutual agreement.

Fornalik met with chairman of the Polish football association (PZPN), Zbigniew Boniek last Friday to discuss his future, according to the Przeglad Sportowy sports daily.

Cash-strapped PZPN want Fornalik to resign after a poor run of results culminating in the tame 1 – 1 draw with Moldova in World Cup qualifying Group H this month, leaving the side in fourth place with little chance of reaching the finals in Brazil next summer.

If PZPN sack Fornalik then they have to pay the coach severance pay of up to 1 million zloty (250,000 euros).

If the coach, who took over from Franciszek Smuda in July 2012, agrees to fall on his sword the association can avoid the payment.

Fornalik and Boniek are meeting again on Monday to discuss the issue. (pg)
