Poland off to winning start in World Table Tennis Championships

Poland defeated Russia 3-0 on Monday in the opening clash of the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

Robert Floras beat Alexander Shibaev 3-2 (17-15, 12-10, 10-12, 6-11, 12-10), while team-mate Daniel Gorak trounced Aleksey Livencov 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-9).
Wang Zeng Yi also had a relatively comfortable victory over Kirill Skachkov 3-1 (11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6).
The Poles, who are competing in Group A, will have a more trying showdown on Tuesday against defending champions China.
The winners of each group advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the second and third-placed teams will go into the second round. (nh)
