The 21 year-old Paula Kania made, not just her debut at Wimbledon but her first appearance at a Grand Slam tournament on Monday when she faced Li Na on Centre Cpurt.

The world's ranked 175 lost 7-5, 6-1 but impressed many at court-side.

“There are so many good things about Paula Kania's game. She has great depth on her groundstrokes and she's ready to absorb power and movement,” former tennis star Tracey Austin told the BBC.

Later, Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded four this year, was 4 – 2 up on opponent Andrea Mitu when rain stopped play. The match will resume on Tuesday.

In the men's round, Poland's top seed is Jerzy Janowicz, who, though reaching the semi-finals at the tournament last year, is seeded down at number 15.

In the men's doubles, Łukasz Kubot and Swede Robert Lindstedt are seeded 7 and Marcin Matkowski and his Columbian partner Juan Sebastian Cabal are seeded 15. (pg)
