The Polish star didn't get off to the best of starts, with Fichman breaking Radwanska's service in the very first game of the match.

But Radwanska wasted no time in turning the tables, winning the next 12 games in a row and wrapping up the encounter in 47 minutes flat.

The odds had been firmly stacked against Fichman, who is ranked No.112 by WTA, against Radwanska at No.5.

“We've known each other for a long time going back to the juniors, but we had never played against each other,” Radwanska commented after the clash.

“The first match is always tricky, but today everything was working my way.

“It was a pretty good start for me,” she said.

Radwanska will now face a more trying opponent in the form of Chinese hopeful Peng Shuai (WTA No 39.)

Meanwhile, two Polish women are due to make their US Open debuts on Tuesday. Katarzyna Piter (WTA No. 111) will play Serb Aleksandra Krunic (WTA No. 145), and Paula Kania (WTA No.159) will play Chinese Qiang Wang (WTA No.139). (nh)
