Hungary, which is regarded as one of the strongest countries competing in the championships, won the first event of the day, triumphing in the 20-seater Men's Masters 500m.

The tradition of dragon boat racing has its roots in folk customs in southern China, where competing villages have fielded sides for at least 2000 years.

In today's sport, the distinctive boats must be 12.4 metres long.

The first Polish dragon boat event was held in Gdansk in 1997, and Poznan is currently hosting the World Championships for the second time on the artificial Lake Malta (Jezioro Maltanskie).

This year's tournament ends on Sunday 31 August. (nh)
