Polish cross-country skier Justyna Kowalczyk has won two Alpen Cup events at the Austrian resort of Hochfilzen after pulling out of the World Cup series last week.

On Friday, Kowalczyk won the sprint event, beating Austria’s Katerina Smutna. On Saturday, Kowalczyk took first place on the podium again, winning the 5km classic.

Earlier the race had been planned for 10km, but the organisers shortened the course.

Kowalczyk finished the course in 13 minutes and 46 seconds, holding a 22.3 second advantage over Smutna and 25.4 seconds in front of Germany’s Julia Begler.

Kowalczyk announced her decision to drop out of the world cup competition after last week’s events at Davos, during which she was knocked out in the qualifiers coming in 53rd.

Kowalczyk wrote on her Facebook page that “it has been a tough year”, with pundits believing that she wants to concentrate on training ahead of the world championships in Falun, Sweden, in February next year. (jb)
