Born in Siemianowice Śląskie, Upper Silesia, Szeja made his national debut in October 1965, when Poland thrashed Finland 7-0 in Szczecin.

Altogether, Szeja won 15 caps for Poland, while also playing for Silesian side Zagłębie Wałbrzych.

In 1973 he won a contract to play abroad for French side Metz, and subsequently for Auxerre (1974-1980).

Szeja was part of Poland's Olympic squad in Munich for the 1972 games, during which Poland won the gold medal. However, although he was the reserve goalie, he was not sent onto the pitch, and he only played in the qualifying matches.

Marian Szeja married in 1961 and had two sons, Bernard and Dariusz, who both played for Zagłębie Wałbrzych like their father. (nh)
