“It was an incredible day,’’ the 24-year-old told Polish journalists after wrapping up the race.

“It’s hard to find words to convey how I feel.’’

The hilly 258-km course is the Netherlands’ longest race, and defending champion Philippe Gilbert had been hoping to notch up his fourth Amstel title.

However, the Belgian had to settle for tenth place.

Kwiatkowski showed he was a force to be reckoned with when he became world champion in 2014.

Sunday’s victory marked him out as the first world champion to win the Amstel Gold Race since Frenchman Bernard Hinault did so in 1981. (nh)
