The championships which were held on Sunday pitched the teams coached by rivals Dariusz Rozum – the president of the Polish Sumo Association – and Andrzej Wojda, its general secretary.

Rozum's team won six medals (four gold, one silver and one bronze), while the team led by Wojda had to make do with just four (three gold and one bronze).

The stars of the show were Monika Skiba and Michał Luto, both members of Rozum's Niedźwiadek Warszawa Student Sport Club, who both took the medal in the open categories.

Other weight categories for women were between 55kg and over 95 kg, while males fought in categories between 70 kg and over 115 kg.

“This is the first time I have visited a competition since taking over the mission in Poland. Sumo is not just a sport, it is also an art. I am grateful to the Polish Sumo Association for cultivating the tradition of the discipline in this country. The level of competition was extremely high,” said the first secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Poland, Sumie Arima.

Sumo is a sport which is steeped in history in Japan, with some archaeological finds related to the sport dating back to the third century AD. (rg)
