“The Hungarians were in a privileged position as they only needed a draw,” former forward and nine-times participant of the World Championships Wojciech Tkacz told the PAP news agency, adding that “[Poland] had to open up and take greater risks”.

Poland’s coach Jacek Płachta said that “it was a tough match for us, the Hungarians played a very good game and deserved the win”.

“We were so close to promotion, although I think we played a good tournament; I had a team without stars which nevertheless put up a fight. I’m proud to work with such players,” Płachta told PAP.

Kazakhstan won the Championships in Kraków, ahead of Hungary, while Poland took third place, beating Japan, Italy and Ukraine, which now faces relegation to the 1B Division. (jb)
