The race involved running through fire, swimming through icy water, climbing over hay bales, and inching over rope bridges.

“I'm a little battered, but alive somehow,” the winner declared, after finishing the epic challenge in 1 hour and 17 minutes.

The victor's toughest section in the showdown, which was held at Warsaw's Służewiec race course, proved to be a 3-metre-high climbing wall.

“I only managed it on the third attempt,” he admitted.

The winner said he had been training six times a week in the run-up to the race.

“The course is very demanding, you can easily break a leg here,” he concluded. (nh)
