Ahead of Thursday’s match, Janowicz said that Mayer “has a very good serve, even the second is hard to receive because he plays it very aggressively”.

Janowicz’s fears came true, as the Argentinian won all games which he served in the first two sets, also breaking Janowicz’s serve once in each.

In the third game of the third set Mayer took advantage of a second break point and took the lead, although Janowicz managed to return to form in long eighth game which saw him break Mayer’s serve. The third set led to a tie-break, which the Pole won 7-1.

However, the fourth set proved conclusive for the Argentinian, who pushed ahead with Janowicz only taking one game. (jb)
