Polish team wraps up European Games in Baku

Poland finished 19th overall in the 1st European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, wrapping up the tournament with 20 medals.

Polish stars in the inaugural games included gold-medal-winners Marta Walczykiewicz and Angelika Wątor, who triumphed in the women's K1 200m kayak and the women's individual sabre, respectively.

Besides the two golds, Poland also managed eight silver and ten bronze medals.

Fifty countries competed in the games, which took in twenty sports.

Russia won overall with 164 medals, including 79 golds. Host country Azerbaijan was second while Great Britain came third.

The games ended on Sunday with a spectacular closing ceremony involving dancers and fireworks. (nh)
