The Pole, currently ranked No. 47 in the ATP World Tour rankings, and having made the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2013, had been the favourite to beat Ilhan (No. 82). But it was not to be.

Janowicz, whose temper has been noted in the past by sport pundits, lost his cool with a chanting Polish fan, and later asked for a journalist to leave the room at a post-match press conference.

This is the first time that I have lost at Wimbledon in the first round, but the best players, as we know, have also lost here,” Janowicz said.

There is nothing to despair about, I just need to prepare for the next event,” he added.

Meanwhile, for Polish fans, all eyes are now on Agnieszka Radwańska, who is due to play her first round match against Czech Lucie Hradecka shortly after midday on Tuesday. (nh)
