Polish sports commentators are unanimous in describing the draw as very good for the national team. Poland’s star Robert Lewandowski has tweeted: ‘An even group. We’ll manage.’

The draw was held in St Petersburg, one of the eleven Russian cities to host the tournament, scheduled for mid-June – mid July 2018. The nine group winners will progress to the finals, while the eight best runners-up will take part in play-offs in November 2017. Germany are the holders of the World Cup, after defeating Argentina in Brazil in 2014, where Poland failed to qualify.

In the current UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying round Poland have 14 points from six games and stand a good chance of playing in the finals in France. Their remaining four matches are against Germany (4 September, Frankfurt), Gibraltar (7 September, Warsaw), Scotland (8 October, Glasgow) and the Republic of Ireland (11 October, Warsaw). (mk/jh/rk)
