It was a reassuring start to the Grand Slam tournament for Radwańska, who took just 63 minutes to wrap up her straight set victory.

The number 15 seed now goes through to an all-Polish second round, facing Magda Linette, who defeated Radwańska's younger sister Urszula in the first round.

Over the last nine years, Radwańska has made the fourth round of the US Open four times, but she has never got further.

Meanwhile, Jerzy Janowicz fell at the first hurdle, losing to Spaniard Pablo Carreño-Busta 1-3.

Janowicz put up a fight, taking the second set 6-4, and dragging out the match for two hours and seventeen minutes.

But he was unable to keep up the momentum, taking just two games in the third set. (nh/rk)
