The Poles had a challenge on their hands right from the off, with thousands of orange-clad fans turning out in Rotterdam to support the home side.

Nevertheless, after losing the first set, Poland managed to draw level in the second encounter, winning in a tightly fought battle 25-23.

However, the Dutch regained the advantage in the third set and likewise went on to take the fourth.

Today we could not do enough against this perfect Dutch team,” admitted Polish player Anna Grejman after the match.

Of course our key defensive player was injured yesterday.

Her substitute did well, but our defence and blocking was not perfect,” she said.

That made the difference.”

The Netherlands will now play Turkey on Saturday in the semi-finals.

The championship, which is being co-hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium, wraps up in Rotterdam on 4 October. (nh/rk)
