The 34-year-old, who goes by the nickname of Cygan (Gypsy), owing to his Roma ancestry, was recently suspended from the sport for two years, on account of doping.

The Light Heavyweight boxer made his professional debut in 2001, notching up an impressive record over the years, with 39 wins and just 2 losses.

A statement on the boxer's Facebook profile appealed for both fans and journalists to stay away from the hospital, noting that only Kostecki's wife is allowed to visit him.

While confirming that Kostecki is in a serious condition in intensive care,” the post noted that out of respect for the sportsman, no other details can be revealed at present concerning the reasons for his state of health. (nh/rk)
