The 14th official opening of Poland's so-called 'walrus' season was held on Sunday, with winter swimmers taking a chilly dip.

The frolics began in Stare Jabłonki, northern Poland, on the Szeląg Mały lake, with many participants sporting fantastical bathing costumes.

About 250 'walruses' waded into the water, the oldest being 73, and the youngest 4.

Meanwhile, a world record attempt has been planned for 13 December, when Polish challengers hope to smash a winter swimming record.

The aim is to surpass the largest amount of people (1799 at present) to have ever entered the water at the same time. The temperature must be lower than 10 degrees Celsius. (nh/rk)
