The first stage had been cancelled owing to treacherous weather conditions, and the Pole, who has been dubbed 'SuperSonik', is currently just under seven minutes behind leader Ignacio Casale of Chile.

Meanwhile, in the car category, former ski jumper Adam Małysz was the highest placed Polish competitor, in 15th position. Jakub Przygoński is coming 17th and Marek Dąbrowski 24th.

Motorcylist Jakub Piątek finished 36th in his category.

The rally, which is now expected to include 12 rather than 13 stages, is due to wrap up in Rosario, Argentina, on 16th January, having passed through Bolivia. (nh)
