The Russian-Spanish trainer had previously coached the Hungarian national side, while simultaneously managing Polish league side Vive Tauron Kielce.

He takes up the reins of his new job as Poland prepares for the Olympic qualifications in Gdańsk this April.

I'm immensely proud that I've been given the chance to lead the national team,” he told the Polish Press Agency.

I want to accomplish the greatest goals,” he added.

Former coach Michael Biegler resigned after the Poles failed to reach the semi-finals of this year's European Championships - hosted in Poland - losing to Croatia in the decisive match.

The Croats had needed a victory margin of eleven goals to reach the semi-finals, but the guests pulled it off, winning 37-23.

Duyshebaev, now 47, once played for the former Soviet Union, winning gold as part of the so-called Unified Team at the 1992 Olympics. The following year, as part of the Russian team, he won gold at the World Championships. He also played for the Spanish national team between 1996 and 2002. (nh)
