The Polish side shares the spot with the Cape Verde Islands, which likewise advanced, in their case by two places.

Meanwhile, there is no change in the top ten, with Belgium maintaining the No.1 spot, followed by Argentina, Spain, Germany and Chile.

Polish fans are keeping fingers crossed that their side will be able to rise to the occasion at this summer's European Championships.

Poland's first EURO 2016 clash is scheduled for 12 June in Nice, against Northern Ireland. Other sides in Poland's Group C are Germany and Ukraine.

Although Germany will be a tough nut to crack, the Poles are rubbing shoulders with their other Group C rivals, with Ukraine currently placed at No. 27 by FIFA and Northern Ireland No.28.

Players such as Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) and Grzegorz Krychowiak (Sevilla) have won international acclaim of late but it remains to be seen whether the Polish team can gel on the pitch when it really counts. (nh/pk)
