In the relay, the first leg was taken by Ewelina Ptak, who until recently had run the 100m and 200m, and as it was, the Pole was presented with something of a shocker in Sunday's final.

Jamaica's first-leg runner fell over and Ptak narrowly avoided a collision, but she kept her cool and maintained her rhythm.

The Polish pace was kept up by subsequent runners Małgorzata Hołub, Magdalena Gorzkowska and Justyna Święty, with the Poles ultimately finishing second behind the Americans.

Poland managed a time of 3.31,15, whereas the Americans finished in 3.26,28.

Meanwhile, Kamila Licwinko took bronze in the high jump, managing 1.96m. American Vashti Cunningham won the gold, while silver was taken by Spaniard Guth Beitia.

Poland's previous medal in the tournament was won by Piotr Lisek, who took bronze in the men's pole vault. (nh/pk)
