Attempts to bring one of Poland's top basketball players out of a coma have proved unsuccessful so far, after the former national player suffered a heart attack on Wednesday.

Malgorzata Dydek, who at 7 foot 2 (216 cms) is the tallest female basketball player in the world, collapsed at her Australian home on Wednesday morning, and was rushed to a hospital in Brisbane.

It is a tense time for the family, as the Polish star is three months pregnant.

“Luckily it was morning, when her husband was at home,'” said the player's sister Katarzyna, who is herself a basketball coach.

“An ambulance arrived five minutes later, and resuscitation began just ten minutes after the accident.”

Although attempts to rouse Dydek from the coma have proved unsuccessful so far, the family remains confident.

“We're optimistic as the results of the tests done in the hospital are proving positive,” said Katarzyna Dydek. (nh)
