Polish ocean adventurer Aleksander Doba on Sunday set off on his third and most difficult transatlantic crossing, braving a hazardous route solo in a seven-metre kayak.

Waving goodbye to his wife and a crowd of over 100 Poles who had come to see him off, Doba set off from New Jersey in the US at around 1pm local time (7pm CET).
He aims to reach Lisbon, Portugal, by September 10, the day of his 70th birthday, after more than three months at sea.
Doba has already crossed the Atlantic but in the opposite direction, from Europe to North America.
The 8,000 km northerly route he is now undertaking from America to Europe is more difficult, with lower temperatures and fiercer storms. (pk)
