"I'm very happy the negotiations yielded a positive result and that I'll stay at Bayern for a few more years. We still have ambitious goals," the 28-year-old, who captains the Polish national squad, was cited on the German side’s website as saying.

The details of the contract were not disclosed, but according to Bild newspaper’s website, the Pole’s earnings will increase from around EUR 10 million to over EUR 15 million a year.

FC Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "I'm happy we've secured the services of one of the world's best centre-forwards over the long term.

“We now have certainty that another key player will wear the FC Bayern shirt in the coming years."

Deputy chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen added: "We had intense, but always respectful and fair discussions, so I'd like to thank Robert Lewandowski's agents for the constructive negotiations."

Lewandowski has scored 11 goals in league matches this season, plus five in the Champions League.

He joined Bayern Munich in 2014 and is the Bavaria side’s most prolific goal scorer.

With a total of 132 goals in Germany's top division since 2010, Lewandowski is the third-highest non-German goal scorer in Bundesliga history behind Peruvian Claudio Pizarro (190) and Brazilian Giovane Elber (133). (pk)
