Champion weightlifter accused of doping, Poland’s Kołecki to receive Olympic gold

The International Weightlifting Federation will award Polish weightlifter Szymon Kołecki a gold medal for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the Polish Weightlifting Federation has said.

Kazakhstani weightlifter Ilya Ilyin was stripped of his gold medal after samples from the Beijing games were retested for drugs.
Kołecki gained a total of 403 points in the 94-kilogram category, hoisting 224 kilograms for the clean and jerk and 179 for the snatch.
Drug tests also caused a reshuffle in the 103-kilogram category results and Poland’s Marcin Dołega will be awarded a bronze medal, the Polish Weightlifting Federation said. (vb/pk)
