Janowicz, ranked no. 278 by the ATP, was beaten 6:4, 6:4, 2:6, 2:6, 3:6 in Melbourne by Cilic, who is seventh in the ATP ranking. The 26-year-old Pole was hit by injuries last year.

Cilic won on Monday despite losing the first two sets, the fifth time in his career that he has managed to turn such a match around.

Janowicz is now to take part in the doubles at Melbourne, partnering up with Marcin Matkowski.

Poland’s Agnieszka Radwańska and Magda Linette are due to start their Melbourne campaign on Tuesday in the women’s singles.
