According to US broadcaster ESPN, a random drug test in mid-January in Warsaw returned a positive result.
The test was conducted as part of the world boxing’s Clean Boxing Program, overseen by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), the broadcaster said.
Citing a letter from the VADA president, ESPN said Wawrzyk could request a retest of the samples. If a second test proves the Polish boxer is clean, he can compete in the 25 February fight against American Deontay Wilder.
But according to ESPN, a different second result is “extraordinarily uncommon”. (vb/pk)
