Cross-country skiing: Poland’s Kowalczyk wins in South Korea

She was 56 seconds ahead of the runner-up, American Elizabeth Stephen, and 1,14.8 ahead Japan’s Masako Ishida in third place.

This is the 50th world cup win in Kowalczyk’s career and her first in over three years.

"I am very surprised that I kept up the lead [throughout the race],” said Kowalczyk.

"I also had very well prepared skis," she added.

Top athletes from countries such as Norway, Finland and Sweden did not participate in the World Cup in Pyeongchang because they are currently competing in the championships of their respective countries.

Pyeongchang will host the Winter Olympic Games next year. (mol/pk)
