Austria's Stefan Kraft took first place in the Saturday competition with a total of 270.8 points, while Germany's Andreas Wellinger and Markus Eisenbichler came behind with 268.7 and 263.6 points, respectively.

Poland's Maciej Kot came just behind Stoch, Dawid Kubacki finished eighth and Piotr Żyła was 19th.

Fans were expecting better results from the Polish jumpers, who have stood on the podium in other competitions this year. The country currently leads in the Nations Cup.

Polish President Andrzej Duda thanked Stoch and the other jumpers for their efforts.

“Heads up, gentlemen, medals are within reach,” he said, adding: “Fingers crossed in coming competitions”. (vb/pk)
