World Anti-Doping Agency role for Polish sports minister

Prime Minister Beata Szydło told a press conference on Wednesday that the appointment was a success both for Bańka, a former 400-metres sprinter-turned-politician, and for Poland as a country that wants to actively fight doping in sport.

"We are determined that Polish sport clean should be clean," Szydło said.

Bańka said he would urge other European sport ministers to increase the World Anti-Doping Agency’s resources for investigations "so that Europe even more clearly articulates the need to fight for clean sport."

The World Anti-Doping Agency was established in 1999 as an international, independent organisation funded by sport bodies and governments.

Poland was in 13th place internationally in terms of violations of anti-doping rules in 2015, according to a new report on drugs offences in global sport.
