“Tomasz Gollob has been woken, is breathing independently, without a respirator,” said Robert Włodarski, head of the intensive care unit at the hospital where the rider is being treated.

“I spoke with him, he asked about things to do with family,” Włodarski said, adding: “This is great news, but we were expecting it to happen somewhat later.”

The 2010 world champion was airlifted to hospital for emergency surgery after he crashed during a training lap ahead of a later motocross event in Chełmno, in northern Poland, on Sunday.

His spine and spinal cord were injured and he bruised both lungs in the accident.

Gollob was put in an induced coma before undergoing surgery on Sunday. His surgeon on Sunday said there was a chance Gollob would be paralysed. (vb/pk)
