The 46-year-old 2010 world champion on Friday started working with a psychologist, said anesthesiologist Dr. Robert Włodarski, from the hospital in Bydgoszcz, in Poland's north, where Gollob is being treated.

“Work with a psychologist will continue. The [rider] suffered a very serious injury, so it is very advisable," said Włodarski.

He added that he wants to move Gollob to a neurosurgical unit on Tuesday. Until then, the rider will remain in intensive care.

Gollob injured his spine, broke a rib and bruised his lungs in an accident during a training lap ahead of a motocross competition in Chełmno, northern Poland, on Sunday.

He was airlifted to hospital for emergency surgery and was woken out of an induced coma on Tuesday. (pk)
