Poland's national handball team on Sunday tied 27:27 with Belarus in its fourth European Championship qualifier, having lost previous games with Belarus, Serbia and Romania.

The match was considered a last chance for Poland to qualify for the championship. Belarus was leading 4:2 by the fourth minute of the game, but the Polish team soon evened out the score.

The first time the Poles took the lead was in the 44th minute, inching ahead 21:20.

Coach Talant Duyshebaev announced he was ready to step down. He said that the 14 months he had led the Polish team were an "honour".

Poland ended last in the Group 2 qualifying round for the 2018 European Men's championship with just one point.

It had earlier lost at home to Serbia 32:37, away to Romania 23:28, and 23:32 in an earlier game against Belarus.

Serbia and Belarus will go to the championships in Croatia.

The last time Poland did not qualify for the competition was in 2000, when the event was also hosted by Croatia. (rg/pk)
