Poland’s handball federation will speak with the national squad’s coach, who recently said he is ready to resign after the team lost a European Championships qualifier, Polskie Radio reported.

The coach, Talant Duyshebaev, announced that he would quit after his team tied with Belarus on Sunday, leaving Poland with nearly no chance of play in next year’s tournament.

A decision on whether the federation will accept his resignation will come after the meeting, according to Polskie Radio.

But Duyshebaev said that he would stay on until the end of qualifiers.

The Polish national team still has two matches in the qualifying round and will face off against Serbia on 14 June and Romania on 16 June.

Poland has a very slim chance of going through to the championships, Polish Radio said.

In the second phase of qualifiers, 28 teams were split into seven groups of four. The top two teams from each group plus the highest-scoring third-placed team will play in the tournament next year.

In fourth spot with just one point, Poland currently stands at the bottom of its group’s ranking.

Duyshebaev has been with the Polish team for a little over a year. He was expected to prepare the team for the 2020 Olympics. (vb/di)
