The head of the federation and the coach met to discuss the Polish team's performance, which in qualifiers for the 2018 European championships included three losses and a draw, ruling out any chance of Poland playing in the tournament next year.

“I thank the federation's authorities for their trust, the team and partners for their hard work. Leading the Polish team was my pride, great honour and distinction,” Duyshebaev said, adding that he feels responsible for failing to deliver on promises of taking the Polish team to the 2018 championships.

He has pledged to pass on his experience to his successor. A new coach has not yet been named.

Duyshebaev coached the Polish men's handball squad since February 2016. The team just missed a podium spot at the Rio Olympics last year and took 17th place in the World Championships in France in January.

In qualifiers for the European Championships in 2018, the Polish team lost 32:37 to Serbia, 23:28 to Romania, and 23:32 to Belarus and in a rematch with Belarus drew 27:27.

The squad still faces Romania and Serbia in June in its last matches in the qualifying round. With just one point, Poland is at the bottom of group two. (vb/pk)
