The teams were vying for a spot in the championship round of the tournament after failing to place first in the group round.

Poland lost its first match in the competition 0:3 to Serbia but then won 3:0 against both Finland and Estonia, ranking second in the group and still with a chance at the quarterfinal.

But yesterday's 21:25, 21:25, 19:25 result in Slovenia's favour means the latter will go on to play against Russia in the next stage.

EuroVolley 2017 was Poland's first tournament with Ferdinando De Giorgi as coach. The "red-and-whites", as they are affectionately known for their national colours, are probably looking at big changes, the team's Bartosz Kurek said. (vb/pk)
