Kubot is behind his Brazilian doubles partner Marcelo Melo. They have the same number of points but Melo has played one less tournament this year.
The pair won the men’s doubles at the Paris Masters tennis tournament in the French capital on Sunday.
That victory marked Kubot and Melo’s sixth title of the season, after triumphs at Wimbledon, Miami, Madrid, Halle and s'Hertogenbosch.
Kubot has played in 24 tournaments this year, one more than Melo. The Pole teamed up with a partner other than Melo in four of them.
Kubot and Melo are tipped among the favourites to win this year’s ATP Finals in London on November 12-19.
Poland’s Wojciech Fibak was ranked second in the doubles in February 1979.
