Poland's interior ministry has released a booklet to remind football fans that they should take their hats off for the national anthem and never let the Polish flag touch the floor.

The booklet is to be distributed to fans ahead of a friendly between Poland and Uruguay on the eve of the 99th anniversary of Poland's independence on Saturday.

The most important hints and tips will also be displayed on jumbotrons at the National Stadium.

According to the booklet, Poland's flag must be clean and the colours vivid, and it cannot be wrinkled or ragged. It is also never allowed to touch the floor or water, and cannot bear texts or images.

It has been customary for fans of various sports to put the name of the town they are from on the national colours when supporting their national teams, and the booklet said this cannot be done on the actual flag, which has a 5:8 ratio, but can be done on other white and red banners.

Poland plays Uruguay at the National Stadium in Warsaw on Friday, with kick-off at 8:45 pm.

It will be goalie Artur Boruc's last match for the national team, and Polish star Robert Lewandowski will sit it out as a result of an injury. (vb)
