A group of Polish mountain climbers have trekked to an altitude of 5,700 metres ahead of their winter attempt to climb K2, the last of the eight-thousanders left to be conquered in winter.

Weather permitting, the climbers are expected on Tuesday to reach Camp 1, located at 5,900 metres above sea level.

The group has been at the foot of K2 since 9 January, when they completed the 100-kilometre trek to base camp at 5,150 metres.

The expedition to the peak of the 8,611-metre tall K2 will go through four camps, the last of which is located at 8,000 metres.

The team is led by Krzysztof Wielicki, a 67-year-old climber who has scaled all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters. (vb/pk)
