Hołowczyc, 55, a European and Polish rallying champion, said that his speed had been measured inaccurately near Nowa Ruda, south-western Poland.

Police told him that, according to their video camera, he was driving at 113 km/h (70 mph) in a built-up area, Hołowczyc wrote on Facebook on Friday.

He said he told the officers that the reading registered their own speed, rather than his.

He added he told police that “this method of measurement is not precise, there are court judgments” to that effect.

In 2015, Hołowczyc finished third in the general classification of the Dakar Rally.
