Athletics: Gold for Poland’s Włodarczyk in Berlin

Poles won another three medals on the last day of the European Athletics Championships in Berlin on Sunday, with Anita Włodarczyk taking the gold in the women's hammer throw.

Włodarczyk became the European champion for the fourth time in a row, with a best throw of 78.94 metres.

Her countrywoman Joanna Fiodorow took the bronze medal with 74.00 metres. Poland’s Malwina Kopron came fourth with 72.20 metres.

Meanwhile, Polish runner Sofia Ennaoui won the silver in the women’s 1,500 metres with a time of 4:03.08.

With a total of 12 medals, seven gold, four silver and one bronze, Poland finished second behind Britain in the overall medals table at the championships in the German capital, public broadcaster TVP Sport reported.

On Saturday, Poland’s Justyna Święty-Ersetic won the women’s 400 metres, posting a European lead of 50.41.

Her countryman Adam Kszczot became the European champion in the men’s 800 metres, finishing with a season’s best of 1:44.59.

In the final event on Saturday, the Polish women’s 4x400 metres relay team of Małgorzata Hołub-Kowalik, Iga Baumgart-Witan, Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz and Święty-Ersetic claimed the sixth gold medal for their country, after finishing in 3:26.59, ahead of second-placed France and third-placed Britain.

On Friday, Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski took the silver in the men’s 1,500 metres.

Two days earlier, Poland’s Paulina Guba took the gold in the women's shot put.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Michał Haratyk won the gold in the men's shot put while his countryman Konrad Bukowiecki took the silver.

Earlier that day, Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won the gold and Paweł Fajdek took the silver in the men’s hammer throw.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
