With a total of 12 medals, seven gold, four silver and one bronze, Poland finished second behind Britain in the overall medals table at the event in the German capital, which ended on Sunday.

“Those were really beautiful, historic championships … absolutely the best performance in the history of Polish athletics,” Sports Minister Witold Bańka declared on Monday.

Ahead of the championships, Polish sports bosses said they were hoping for eight medals in Berlin.

Poles won three medals on the last day of competition in Berlin on Sunday, with Anita Włodarczyk taking the gold in the women's hammer throw.

On Saturday, Poland’s Justyna Święty-Ersetic won the women’s 400 metres, and her countryman Adam Kszczot became the European champion in the men’s 800 metres.

The Polish women’s 4x400 metres relay team of Małgorzata Hołub-Kowalik, Iga Baumgart-Witan, Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz and Święty-Ersetic grabbed another gold for their country that day.

On Friday, Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski took the silver in the men’s 1,500 metres.

On Wednesday, Poland’s Paulina Guba took the gold in the women's shot put.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Michał Haratyk won the gold in the men's shot put while his countryman Konrad Bukowiecki took the silver.

Earlier that day, Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won the gold and Paweł Fajdek took the silver in the men’s hammer throw.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
