The appointment, which the club announced on Monday, comes after Legia Warsaw last week lost 1-2 to Luxembourg’s semi-professional F91 Dudelange in Europa League qualifiers, a performance that was slammed by critics.

Sá Pinto, 45, is a former Portugal player with 45 international caps.

Legia, who are the Polish champions, fired Croatia’s Klafurić after the team was last month knocked out of Champions League qualifiers and relegated to the lower Europa League.

In May, Legia won the Polish premier league championship for the third time in a row.

The Polish side qualified for the group stage of the 2016/2017 Champions League and drew 3-3 with Spain's Real Madrid in November 2016.

Legia later that month lost 4-8 to German side Borussia Dortmund in the highest scoring match in Champions League history.
