President praises Polish athletes for successes in Berlin

"You have taken Polish athletics to an international level," Duda said at a meeting in the presidential palace in Warsaw.

He added: “Without hard, titanic effort, without pain, there is no success.”

With a total of 12 medals, seven gold, four silver and one bronze, Poland finished second behind Britain in the overall medals table at the athletics championships in Germany, which ended on Sunday.

Poles won three medals on the last day of competition, with Anita Włodarczyk taking the gold in the women's hammer throw.

On Saturday, Poland’s Justyna Święty-Ersetic won the women’s 400 metres, and her countryman Adam Kszczot became the European champion in the men’s 800 metres.

The Polish women’s 4x400 metres relay team grabbed another gold for their country that day.

On Friday, Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski took the silver in the men’s 1,500 metres.

Earlier, Poland’s Paulina Guba came first in the women's shot put. Michał Haratyk won the gold in the men's shot put while his countryman Konrad Bukowiecki took the silver.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won the gold and Paweł Fajdek took the silver in the men’s hammer throw.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
