The 21-year-old Pole beat on Tuesday Italy’s Stefano Travaglia, who retired amid extreme heat trailing 2-6, 6-2, 6-7, 0-3 in their first-round men's singles match at Flushing Meadows.

Hurkacz, 109th in the world ranking, next takes on Croatia’s Marin Cilic, a former US Open champion, in the round of 64.

Radwańska, Linette out of women's singles

Meanwhile, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwańska and Magda Linette both crashed out of the US Open in the first round on Monday.

Radwańska, a former world No. 2 who has recently been hit by health problems and a slump in form, lost to Germany’s Tatjana Maria in straight sets, 3-6, 3-6, in what was her worst-ever performance in the New York Grand Slam event.

The Polish player in July crashed out of the Wimbledon tennis championships in the second round.

Radwańska missed this season’s French Open tournament, her first Grand Slam absence since 2006.

Linette, who is ranked No. 68 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), was eliminated from the US Open by 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. The 26-year-old Pole was outplayed by the American star in straight sets, 4-6, 0-6, on the first day of the tournament.
