Marcin Gortat, the only Pole in the US National Basketball Association, has donated thousands of dollars to charity after a quirky challenge involving traditional Polish blood sausage, Polish Radio reported on Wednesday.

A few days ago, the LA Clippers centre, known for his charity work, took to social media to challenge Poles to find an American who would try the Polish delicacy, called kaszanka, with a fried egg on the side.

He said he would give the winner USD 1,000 (PLN 3,800; EUR 885).

Paweł Żuchowski, a US correspondent for private Polish broadcaster RMF FM, put a US marine and Iraqi war veteran up to the task, recording a video of the challenge being completed.

But Żuchowki said that neither he nor the vet wanted a share in the reward, asking instead for Gortat to donate the money to a children’s hospice in Poland’s northwest.

Gortat responded by sending USD 5,000 to the hospice. He also sent the marine tickets to an LA Clippers game. (vb/pk)
